Why Biomass?
Biomass heating systems help to reduce dependency on fossil fuels, save money on energy bills and cut carbon emissions. They provide a highly sustainable heating solution from individual homes right up to large scale industrial or public buildings, and can easily be installed in new projects or retro-fitted. They offer a very cost effective alternative to oil for buildings that are off-grid.
What are the benefits?
Biomass boilers are one of the technologies that are eligible for payments under the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI). This means that not only will your heating system save you money and reduce your environmental impact, it could also generate income. Commercial users can receive between 1p and 8.6p for every kWh that they produce and use, depending on the size of the boiler (based on the September 2013 tariff).
The domestic scheme which is being introduced in 2014 could pay as much as 12.2p for every kilowatt hour. This would mean that a typical medium sized family home using a 25kw boiler and 33,000kw hours per annum would be paid £4,026 per year, every year for 7 years.
The earlier the scheme is adopted, the greater the payback is likely to be.
The RHI is tied in to whichever boiler is installed, so it is important to choose one that is both reliable and efficient.
